Castle Throws open the Gates

A Possibility No More

Rumors had been swirling that Representative Mike Castle (R-DE) might follow in the foot steps of another Republican and launch a write-in campaign after his upset loss to now Republican Senatorial Candidate Christine O'Donnell. Publicly his spokes people admitted that he had convened a group to run a poll to figure out if the option was even viable. Results are in but with mixed results. However, shortly afterward, Castle announced that he would not seek the senate seat once held by Vice President Joe Biden and he also remained firm in his decision not to endorse O'Donnell.

The Logistics

The internal poll has not yet been released, or if it has I haven't seen it. But the Rasmussen poll conducted during his exploratory period revealed that in that situation, Castle would receive about five percent of the vote, while O'Donnell got forty percent, and Democrat Chris Coons (D-DE) picks up about forty-nine percent. This is actually good news for Christine O'Donnell because it would substantially shrink her opponents lead and would possibly allow for another dark horse victory. However, since Castle's announcement not to run Coons has established a commanding lead of O'Donnell who has been plagued by old video clips of herself saying some pretty crazy things. Actually her initial response to these videos were even better, her first campaign ad opens with the line: "I am not a witch." Classic.

The Senate Republicans may have also played a part in Castle's decision after they announced that they would not support Castle's write-in candidacy and that they are sticking with O'Donnell. Senator John Thune, number four in the leadership of Senate Republicans, stated that the people have chosen Christine O'Donnell and that he has no power or right to go against their will.

Since then, Mike Castle has said that he will serve out the remainder of his term in the House of Representatives in a dignified way because the good people of Delaware deserve no less, and I happen to agree with him. Good luck Mr. Castle, but I have a feeling we have not seen the last of you. So I won't say goodbye, instead just 'see you shortly.'

Later,
Cody
